Geometrical Probability

Geometrical Probability:

The general definition of probability of the occurrence of an event fails if the total number of possible outcomes of a trial in a random experiment is infinite. For example we are supposed to find the probability that a point selected at random in a given region will lie in a specified part of the region then the general definitions fails. In this type of situations the definition of probability is extended and is known as geometrical probability. It is calculated using the following formula

P(E)=frac{ Measure ;of ;specified ;part ;of ;the ;region}{Total; measure;of ;the; region}

Here the measure  can be length, area or volume of the region or space

Illustration: A dart is thrown at a circular dartboard of radius 14 cm such that it will land randomly over the area of the dartboard. What is the probability that it lands at a distance of 7 cm from the center?

Solution: As the dart board is circular in shape with a radius of 14 cm. We will calculate the area of the dart board to find the total measure of the region
